Summary
UHMWPE Sheet Summary

Polyethylene PE 1000 sheet, commonly referred to as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW or UHMWPE), is one of the most popular engineering plastics. It provides excellent resistance to abrasion, chemicals, impact, and wear, while offering a very low coefficient of friction. UHMW is also non-toxic, odorless, and highly resistant to moisture.

UHMW plastic sheet is commonly machined into wear strips, chain guides, and change parts, making it a popular engineering plastic in food processing and bottling operations. Specific grades of PE1000 are also used in bulk material handling applications to line chutes, hoppers, and dump trucks, helping to improve product flow and prevent issues like ratholing and arching.

Features
1. Improve Wear Resistance

One of the most striking properties of UHMW polyethylene is its extremely high abrasion resistance, which is invaluable in many engineering applications. Among all plastics, its wear resistance is the best, outperforming many metal materials (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.). As the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, the material becomes more wear-resistant.

2. Extremely High Impact Resistance

The impact strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is related to its molecular weight. When the molecular weight is lower than 2 million, the impact strength increases with molecular weight, reaching a peak at about 2 million. Beyond this peak, the impact strength declines because the abnormal molecular chain hinders photocrystallization, leaving a large amorphous region in the macromolecule to absorb large impact energy.

3. Low Friction Coefficient

UHMWPE is highly wear-resistant, has a low coefficient of friction, and offers excellent self-lubrication, making it an ideal material for bearing bushings, sliders, and linings. Utilizing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene for the friction parts of machinery improves wear-resistant lifespan and saves energy.

4. Good Chemical Resistance

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene exhibits excellent chemical corrosion resistance. Except for concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, it remains stable in all lye and acid solutions, including concentrated hydrochloric acid at 80°C, <20% nitric acid, and <75% sulfuric acid. It is also stable in water and liquid detergents. However, it can swell in aromatic or halogenated compounds (especially under higher temperatures), requiring caution during application.

5. Very Low Water Absorption

UHMWPE has an extremely low water absorption rate. It is almost completely non-absorbent and does not swell in water, making it far less absorbent than nylon.

6. Thermal Properties

According to the ASTM method (load 4.6kg/cm²), the heat distortion temperature is 85℃. Under small loads, the service temperature can reach 90℃. In special cases, higher temperatures are permissible. Since high molecular weight polyethylene offers excellent toughness, its low-temperature resistance is exceptional, retaining ductility at temperatures as low as -269℃ without signs of embrittlement.

7. Electrical Properties

UHMWPE exhibits outstanding electrical properties across a wide temperature range. It has a volume resistance of 10¹⁸ Ω·cm, a breakdown voltage of 50KV/mm, and a dielectric constant of 2.3. Its electrical properties change very little within its heat-resistant operating range, making it highly suitable for structural components in electrical engineering and paper mill equipment.

8. Non-toxic

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is tasteless, non-toxic, odorless, non-corrosive, and possesses physiological compatibility. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approve its use in direct contact with food and medicines. Its combination of wear resistance, impact strength, and self-lubrication is outstanding among engineering plastics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q What is UHMWPE (PE 1000)?

UHMWPE stands for Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene. Often referred to as PE 1000, it is a high-performance engineering plastic known for its exceptional abrasion resistance, chemical stability, impact toughness, and very low coefficient of friction.

Q Why is UHMWPE preferred over metals for wear parts?

UHMWPE offers superior wear and abrasion resistance compared to many common metals like carbon steel, stainless steel, and bronze. It is lighter, self-lubricating, prevents product buildup, reduces noise, and lowers energy consumption due to its low friction coefficient.

Q Is UHMWPE safe for food contact?

Yes, UHMWPE is non-toxic, odorless, tasteless, and highly hygienic. It conforms to FDA and USDA regulations, making it safe and widely used for components in food processing, bottling, packaging, and pharmaceutical applications.

Q What are the temperature limits of UHMWPE sheets?

UHMWPE has a heat distortion temperature of 85℃ under load, and can service up to 90℃ under low loads. It performs exceptionally well in low-temperature environments, retaining its ductility and impact resistance down to -269℃ without becoming brittle.

Q Can UHMWPE sheets be customized for specific environmental conditions?

Yes. Beyond standard sheets, UHMWPE can be formulated with additives to create specialized sheets, such as anti-static, flame retardant, anti-UV, anti-radiation, impact-resistant, or MoS2-filled grades for enhanced self-lubrication.
