The primary difference lies in the molecular chain length, which dictates their performance under stress. UHMWPE (PE1000) has a molecular weight range of 3.0 to over 9.0 million g/mol, giving it excellent impact resistance, high tensile strength, and a low coefficient of friction. This makes it suitable for demanding, high-friction applications like coal chutes, truck liners, and dock fenders. In contrast, HDPE (PE300/PE500) has a shorter molecular chain. While it offers excellent chemical resistance and machinability at a lower cost, it will wear down faster under severe abrasive conditions.
UHMWPE has an extremely high melt viscosity, which prevents it from flowing like typical thermoplastics. While it cannot be welded using standard hot-air tools, it can be joined using specialized extrusion welding equipment with high-molecular-weight PE welding rods, or butt-welded under controlled heat and pressure. For structural connections exposed to mechanical stress, we recommend mechanical fasteners (counter-sunk bolts) or custom-molded metallic inserts.
MC Nylon PA6 is hydrophilic and can absorb up to 6-8% of its dry weight in water, which can cause slight dimensional expansion (1-2%) and a minor decrease in mechanical stiffness. If your application involves submersion or precise tolerances in wet conditions, we recommend using Delrin POM (Polyoxymethylene). Delrin has a moisture absorption rate of less than 0.2%, ensuring it maintains its physical shape and precise dimensional tolerances over time.
Compression molding applies high pressure (up to 1200 tons) over a slow heating and cooling cycle. This process prevents internal voids and micro-cracking while minimizing internal stress in sheets thicker than 20mm. Sintered, compression-molded UHMWPE sheets maintain superior dimensional stability during CNC routing and machining compared to extruded sheets, which are prone to warping when cut.
